Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II signaled that he isn’t ruling out the possibility of either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson returning for the 2025 NFL season. He did, however, acknowledge that it’s improbable both return in the same capacity as they did in the 2024 season when Fields began the first six games and Wilson finished the rest of the season. “I wouldn’t shut the door, but I’d remark that it seems rather improbable,” Rooney stated on Monday. “I believe both view themselves as starters, and I’m unsure if they desire to split the same position again next year.” Therefore, I would suggest that it’s likely we won’t end up bringing them both back.
Rooney thinks both are “competent” quarterbacks and expressed his desire to sign only one rather than keeping both on the roster. “They are both proficient quarterbacks, and I would prefer to sign one of them,” Rooney stated. “That will be our main focus, and I believe it will provide us with the greatest chance to progress.” As the Steelers consider if Fields or Wilson will come back next season, the latter achieved a notable accomplishment on Tuesday afternoon. The Steelers revealed that Wilson is going to the Pro Bowl as an alternate since various quarterbacks, including Buffalo Bills standout Josh Allen and possible three-time MVP Lamar Jackson, have withdrawn.
No matter how he arrived, his spouse, Ciara, is pleased for the ex-Super Bowl champion. On Tuesday afternoon, she shared the news on her Instagram story accompanied by yellow and gold heart emojis.
Earlier this month, Wilson expressed his intention to end his career with the Steelers.
“My aim is to stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers for an extended period, ideally concluding my career there, if it’s God’s will,” Wilson stated.
