The Boston Red Sox succumbed to the elements and errors, leading to another loss against the Toronto Blue Jays in Tuesday’s final score of 6-1.
The Red Sox managed only five hits while their ace Garrett Crochet was pitching. Alex Cora relied on the starting pitcher to go deep once more, this time after an additional day of rest, to push through another outing.
“He performed well,” Cora informed reporters, according to NESN’s postgame report. Challenging circumstances. George (Springer) smacks a home run and we fail to execute plays. That was all. He exceeded all expectations. He performed well.
Similar to the offense, the Red Sox were lackluster with their defense in aiding their starter, especially as throwing mistakes by Alex Bregman and Kristian Campbell contributed to a four-run sixth inning for Toronto.
“We failed to execute plays,” Cora emphasized.
Crochet permitted only one earned run yet still feels he hasn’t achieved a dominant level this season following three starts. He fought through five innings on Opening Day, walking four batters in the cold for the Red Sox during his second start against the AL East.
“Awful,” Crochet stated to reporters, according to NESN’s postgame report. “This year, I haven’t experienced a start where I believe I’ve showcased my best performance.” I’m hopeful that it’s due to my building efforts and that they will all arrive later this year.
His supervisor understands that finding and executing pitches in the mid-30s temperatures of April is a challenging job on a windy night at Fenway Park.
“Extremely (challenging),” Cora included. “I stepped onto the mound two times, and I sensed it.” It was breezy, as well. The dugout was fine, but once you stepped out, it was challenging. We constantly grumble about the weather in April. We do not in October. “It is what it is.”
