The Boston Red Sox lost the series to the Toronto Blue Jays after Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat in 11 innings at Fenway Park.
Boston has managed only four runs in these three games, following last weekend’s impressive 36 runs against the St. Louis Cardinals, which included 18 runs on Sunday Night Baseball. Boston keeps struggling with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox recorded 14 strikeouts Wednesday night, marking the re-emergence of a familiar pattern for the offense despite its scoring achievements in recent years.
“We didn’t take advantage,” Alex Cora stated to reporters, according to NESN’s postgame report. “… We must improve in that area.”
Kevin Gausman accumulated 10 of those strikeouts by himself during his impressive outing. The Red Sox struggled to keep up with his fastball and couldn’t assemble effective innings at the plate during a season that has been inconsistent for their offense.
“When you find yourself down in the count as a batter, it creates opportunities for various other pitches,” Triston Casas informed the press. “At times, we can be excessively assertive as a team because we want to stress the importance of getting the ball into play.” “That’s how you earn points and secure victories.”
The Red Sox bounced back from their series defeat against the Texas Rangers, scoring 11 runs in two games to win the series against the Baltimore Orioles. Currently, they have executed a commanding sweep of the Cardinals while producing one-ninth of their offensive output in three games against Toronto.
“Just need to make some changes,” Cora remarked. “We must do this together as a team.” I have confidence in our players. I have confidence in this group. It’s a terrible night. “We need to be present tomorrow and attempt to secure a victory.”
“We haven’t achieved the same level of at-bats,” Alex Bregman, who scored Boston’s sole run with a sacrifice fly, mentioned to reporters according to NESN’s postgame coverage. “Anticipate tomorrow and make an effort to accomplish that.”
Tanner Houck delivered his finest performance of the season to date following difficulties in his initial two appearances. The 2024 All-Star pitched for 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits, along with two walks and two strikeouts while throwing just 90 pitches.
“Houck informed reporters, according to NESN’s postgame report, that he felt much more in harmony with his delivery.”
— The Red Sox had their first match since 1973 where both teams scored in the first inning but didn’t score again until extra innings, as noted in the NESN broadcast.
— Boston is in the second position in the American League with 66 runs scored this season, although the Red Sox have been limited to two runs or fewer in five of their initial 13 games.
Since the beginning of the 2022 season, the Red Sox have a record of 18-30 against the Blue Jays.
— The Red Sox finish the series against the Blue Jays and wrap up the homestand Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park. The initial pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET. You can watch the game along with an hour of pregame coverage on NESN.
