The Detroit Lions have announced significant changes to their coaching staff. John Morton has been appointed as the new offensive coordinator, succeeding Ben Johnson, who recently became the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Morton, 55, previously served as the pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos, where the team averaged 25.0 points per game. He is returning to the Lions, having been a senior offensive assistant with them in 2022. His extensive coaching background includes roles with the New York Jets, Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and New Orleans Saints.
In addition, the Lions have promoted Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator following Aaron Glenn’s departure to the New York Jets. Sheppard, 37, has been with the Lions since 2021, initially as the outside linebackers coach before overseeing the entire linebackers unit.
His promotion has been met with enthusiasm, with many praising his leadership and ability to develop talent. Notably, Sheppard has been instrumental in the growth of players like Malcolm Rodriguez and Alex Anzalone.
These internal promotions reflect the Lions’ commitment to continuity and the development of their coaching staff.
