This year’s spring training has everyone buzzing about the Boston Red Sox prospects.
A significant focus is on Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer to determine if any of them will exit spring training this month with the Red Sox.
However, there’s another opportunity, one that has been overshadowed by Boston’s “Big Three” in recent years, which has begun to draw the interest of Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
“Mikey Romero,” Cora informed the media, according to Peter Abraham from The Boston Globe. “He’s an excellent player; truly an excellent player.” Simply a baseball player — strong at-bats; skilled defender. We simply need to make him well. He took every opportunity this offseason to get himself into great shape. He is much stronger now.
“This is the first occasion I’ve examined regularly.” “I appreciate him as a player.”
The Red Sox selected Romero in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft from Orange Lutheran High School. He was rapidly regarded as a leading infield prospect within Boston’s minor league system, achieving a ranking as high as fifth on MLB Pipeline’s Red Sox prospect list in 2023.
However, injuries hindered Romero’s progress, especially a stress fracture in his spine. He has participated in only 131 games in the minors since becoming part of the Red Sox organization.
Romero, just 21 years old, showcased his potential last season with High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland when he was healthy. He also experienced a power surge with Portland, hitting five home runs in just 10 games.
Romero showcased his left-handed swing last week in a Grapefruit League matchup versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Romero hit 2-for-3, including a solo home run to left-center field and also belted a double.
Romero, currently ranked as the 11th-best prospect for the Red Sox, is expected to start the season again with Portland. However, similar to Boston’s other elite prospects, Romero aims to reach the major leagues as soon as possible.
“Two steps away from the majors isn’t too far,” Romero informed reporters, according to MLB.com’s Ian Browne. Many players are promoted from Double-A. I’m not claiming that’s what will occur for me, but you’re really near. You’re truly near. That’s how I perceive it. I sense that I’m nearing my goal, and I’m eager to focus and put in the effort this year.
