Current MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin has revealed plans to depart from Aprilia for 2026, after racing only one weekend for the Italian team since moving from Ducati at the beginning of the 2025 season.
Reports initially emerged earlier this month indicating that Martin was attempting to escape his two-year contract by invoking a performance clause. This clause would have permitted him to leave after six rounds if he failed to meet specific outcomes, a feat he could not accomplish due to various injuries incurred during testing, training, and racing.
Despite Aprilia’s efforts to ease the situation after Marco Bezzecchi’s victory for Martin’s team at the British Grand Prix last weekend, it appears that Massimo Rivola’s attempt has not succeeded.
Confronted with the need to decide on a date set by contract, I have opted to utilize my right to free myself for the 2026 season,” Martin stated in a message shared on his social media channels.
“I have consistently approached this with respect, clarity, and the singular aim of seizing control of my future as a professional athlete.”
“Regrettably, the situations arising from the crashes, while not impacting our agreement, have influenced this phase.” This is why I have consistently been willing to discuss with Aprilia the possibility of prolonging this period for a specific number of grand prix upon my return to racing.
The goal is for both sides to provide one another with a second opportunity and feel at ease before reaching a conclusion for 2026.
“There is no disagreement or blame.” I simply wish to be able to see the future clearly, following challenging moments and a significant injury, while still striving to offer my best both on and off the track.
Martin further explained the contract clause he executed to free himself from the agreement, noting that the circumstances of his swift exit from Ducati’s satellite team Pramac necessitated this action to secure his future.
“I have never violated the contract at any time,” he asserted.
“Upon signing, I came to an agreement with Aprilia that if specific conditions were not fulfilled, I would retain the right to choose my future for 2026.” This was a crucial requirement for me to agree to the contract offer they presented to me then.
“When I decided to switch manufacturers last year, one of my goals was to have the opportunity to test the bike in actual conditions and to comprehend the team and its working methods.” This allowed me to feel at ease committing to two years rather than just one, so we added that stipulation.
It is now highly probable that Martin will become a Honda rider for 2026, considering the limited number of available seats on the grid.
Current rider Luca Marini, who suffered serious injuries in a crash during Suzuka 8 Hour testing on Wednesday, has a contract that runs out at the conclusion of 2025, potentially paving the way for Martin to partner with Joan Mir in 2026.
