The clock keeps ticking as teams like the Boston Red Sox anticipate the choice of free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
Boston is one of several teams looking to sign the two-time World Series champion to finalize its offseason, but it has been a continuous waiting game. Bregman would address the Red Sox’s requirement for a right-handed hitter, he would significantly enhance the team’s defense, and the 30-year-old possesses ample playoff experience ideal for a leadership position. At this point, it is in the hands of Bregman and his agent Scott Boras to choose.
Bregman is said to be looking for a multi-year deal and has allegedly rejected a six-year contract to rejoin the Houston Astros. However, in spite of the recent optimism from Houston’s front office, it appears that the Red Sox could have an advantage.
“ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that Alex Bregman is probably moving to the Red Sox, (Chicago) Cubs, or (Detroit) Tigers shortly; sources from the Astros organization doubt he’ll come back to Houston.” “If he visits Fenway Park, he might hit the Green Monster while brushing up on the subtleties of playing in the middle infield.” Should he head to Chicago—possibly on a short-term agreement similar to Cody Bellinger’s—he will face the expectation to deliver results. Should he sign with the Tigers, it would effectively signal Detroit’s recognition that, with Tarik Skubal two years away from free agency, the opportunity to win is immediate, and the costly acquisition of Bregman would represent a full commitment to their goals.
Bregman has several reasons to join the Red Sox beyond the Green Monster, a structure he knows well. Bregman was with Boston manager Alex Cora throughout the 2017 season as they pursued the World Series championship in Houston. Bregman would be an incredibly important asset to the organization, both on the field and off, as young players and emerging prospects could gain insights from Bregman during their initial growth stages. Additionally, the possible inclusion of Bregman might transform the Red Sox into true contenders.
Boston’s bullpen has been enhanced with the additions of Justin Wilson and Aroldis Chapman, while the starting rotation has seen upgrades from Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval. With Bregman, a seasoned veteran and established winner potentially joining the clubhouse, the Red Sox may reach new levels and escape their postseason drought by 2025.
