Warriors guard Steph Curry addresses reporters following Golden State’s 132-111 victory against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday evening at the United Center.
Steph Curry isn’t one to ask for a lot, but he does have a single request for the Warriors when his remarkable NBA career eventually reaches its end.
The 36-year-old discussed with Tim Kawakami from The San Francisco Standard during the newest episode of “The TK Show” podcast, where he was inquired about how he hopes to feel when it’s finally time to conclude his NBA career.
“Driven,” Curry said to Kawakami. “I’ve witnessed various situations, as everyone discusses Kobe [Bryant] and his final years, [but] from my perspective, I’m contrasting it with players who spent their entire careers with one team: Dirk [Nowitzki], Tim [Duncan], Kobe in our generation, and you realize you wouldn’t want to experience what the Lakers faced during those closing years.” I understand he was returning from the Achilles injury, yet they were a lottery team; it was primarily about how many points Kobe could tally towards the end of his career. “I don’t wish to find myself in that situation.”
Curry and the Warriors, from start to finish, recognize that they are no longer the legendary dominating power they used to be during the team’s dynastic period over the past ten years, where titles were not just the aim, but the norm each and every season.
This doesn’t mean that Curry and the Warriors lack ambition for another title run; rather, the team’s baseline each season isn’t solely championship or bust anymore.
“Once more, my main point is that you need to be practical,” Curry clarified. “You likely won’t enter a season or playoff series as the constant favorite, given the abundance of talent across the league.” However, we aim to be competitive in areas where we have a shot, and I’m certain that’s what our fans wish to witness. Engaging in significant games, regardless of the outcome, is what I believe we deserve, and I wish this is the reality I experience in the final phase of my career.
How many additional years will Curry compete, and how successful can the Warriors be during the rest of his career? Everything that is left is yet to be observed.
Nonetheless, as long as Curry is on the court, it’s fair to assert that the Warriors will, at the very least, stay competitive.
