World No. 8 Emma Navarro spoke with the media before the 2025 Australian Open and discussed the progress American tennis has experienced lately. Navarro is one of five women, featuring Coco Gauff (3), Jessica Pegula (7), Danielle Collins (11), and Madison Keys (20), ranked in the WTA Top 20 for singles.
On the men’s side, Taylor Fritz had a breakout season, reaching the finals of both the US Open and ATP Finals, achieving a career-high ranking of World No. 4. The Americans kicked off 2025 on a positive note by winning the United Cup, overcoming Poland led by Iga Swiatek in the finals.
Navarro didn’t belong to the victorious group but disclosed her support for her fellow players while responding to a Sportskeeda inquiry in the press area at Melbourne Park on Sunday, January 12.
“I’m thrilled I saw them clinch the United Cup a few weeks back,” Navarro stated. “It’s truly awesome to witness the achievements of other American players and support them; I became quite engaged in watching the United Cup, and it was thrilling.” “It’s wonderful to observe their success.”
I trained with Coco [Gauff] yesterday. It’s wonderful to have those fellow players who come from the same country. “It’s wonderful to support one another.”
Navarro participated in two preliminary tournaments ahead of the Australian Open, experiencing a Round-of-32 defeat to Kimberly Birrell at the Brisbane International and a quarterfinal loss to Liudmila Samsonova in Adelaide.
Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff have competed against each other three times on the tour, with Navarro leading the head-to-head 2-1, winning both of her matches at the Grand Slam events.
In the 2024 Auckland Open semifinals, she faced off against the World No. 3 for her first match and was defeated 6-3, 6-1. A couple of months later, the two clashed in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, and Navarro won 6-4, 6-3.
A few months later, the pair clashed in their home tournament, the US Open, where Navarro secured another win, overcoming Gauff 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Emma Navarro’s initial competitor at the 2025 Australian Open will importantly be a fellow American—Peyton Stearns. During the tour, she has faced Stearns five times, holding a 4-1 advantage in their matches.
