Lewis Hamilton experienced significant frustration; on a new set of medium tyres, he became stuck behind his teammate Charles Leclerc, who was on an alternate strategy, prompting him to request a swap from the team and await a response.
Although Hamilton later claimed he wasn’t upset, Button completely grasped the reasons he might feel that way.
“I understand, as they have a different approach, and the issue is, Lewis spent a lap trailing his teammate,” the 2009 World Champion clarified.
Even a single lap wears out his tyres. It raises the temperature on that medium tire, and you’ve exhausted its performance, and you can’t regain it.
“Indeed, I understand the frustration, and this should have been a strategy established before the race, where you determine if the driver behind is on softer tires and allow him to overtake.”
In reality, Button further stated, “He shouldn’t have had to request” Ferrari to execute the swap.
In an interview with Sky Sports following the Miami event, Hamilton shared his own opinions.

“I was wishing for a safety car, but that never occurred.”

It was that instance that Button mentioned, when Hamilton needed to request his team to allow him the opportunity to overtake his teammate and demonstrate his capability — but Ferrari made their decision too late.
