Carrie Underwood has faced criticism on social media following the announcement of her performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration next Monday, January 20.
The 41-year-old country artist is anticipated to perform “America the Beautiful.” She has earlier chosen not to offer remarks on politics.
A representative from the Presidential Inaugural Committee has stated to The Independent that Underwood is set to perform at the event.
In a different statement to The Independent, Underwood expressed: “I cherish our nation and am privileged to have been invited to perform at the Inauguration and to contribute in a small way to this historic occasion.
I am honored to respond to the call at a moment when we must unite in the spirit of togetherness and focus on the future.
In response to a recent post on Underwood’s Instagram, a fan commented: “It’s so disgusting that you support Trump!” “History will always remember.”
Another person commented on X: “Since Carrie Underwood is [performing] at Trump’s inauguration, I’m blocking her on every app and boycotting her music entirely.”
Underwood also disappointed numerous LGBT+ fans, having earlier expressed support for same-sex marriage. A fan commented on Instagram: “Never refer to yourself as an LGBTQ ally again, you’re backing the person who aims to eliminate LGBTQ rights, you ought to feel embarrassed.”
Another commented: “Singing at the orange buffoons’ inauguration… seems we understand your position.”
Underwood is anticipated to perform alongside the Armed Forces Choir and the United States Naval Academy Glee Club, singing after Vice President JD Vance takes his Oath of Office and prior to Trump taking the Presidential Oath of Office.
The singer did not officially support any candidate before the 2024 election.
In 2017, she sang a parody song at the Country Music Awards alongside fellow artist Brad Paisley, which was seen as lampooning Trump’s social media behavior.
The duo humorously claimed that the CMAs were declared a “politics-free zone” before stating they would disregard those “guidelines” while delivering a rendition of Underwood’s popular song “Before he Cheats” that centered on Trump’s Twitter usage (previously known as X).
At this moment, he’s likely in his pajamas, grabbing his phone… he’s probably saying to Siri, ‘How on earth do you spell Pocahontas?’” sang Paisley.
“At midnight, from the exclusive throne of a gilded White House toilet seat, he jots down ‘Liddle Bob Corker,’ ‘NFL,’ and ‘covfefe,'” the duo persisted, with Underwood concluding the chorus with style and a discussion on the proper way to pronounce Trump’s now-famous Twitter blunder.
Paisley concluded the song with the lyrics: “It’s enjoyable to see, indeed, until tiny Rocket Man ignites a conflict.” “Perhaps next time he will consider his words before tweeting.”
In 2021, Underwood ignited criticism after “liking” a video against masks on Twitter.
The video featured blogger Matt Walsh expressing his worries about Covid masks to the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Public Education.
Certain fans expressed their dissatisfaction with Underwood’s seeming support of his opinions, with one commenting: “Dolly Parton helped finance the Moderna vaccine against covid Carrie Underwood is promoting anti-mask & anti-vaccine misinformation,” while another remarked: “Carrie Underwood is Anti Vaxx….regardless, we will always support Kelly Clarkson as the ultimate champion of American Idol.”
Underwood gained prominence after her victory on American Idol in 2005. The previous year, she came back to the competition show to serve as a judge.
